Burrakatha Dance

Burra katha, also spelled burrakatha, is a storytelling technique used in villages of Andhra Pradesh .Burrakatha was started as devotional songs of nomadic people and became a popular art form. It is believed that this dance is evolved from traditional Tandana Katha; this dance art preaches, entertains and provides relaxation to the rural folk.

Performance—the troupe consists of one main performer and two co-performers. It is a narrative entertainment that consists of prayers, solo drama, dance, songs, poems and jokes. The topic will be either a Hindu mythological story or a contemporary social problem. The center artist is usually dressed with a long angarakha, a beautiful turban with a crest feather, a tight pajama or dhoti, a colorful waistband and jingling bells on his knees.
